Le anime bianche
Ysobel is a shy little girl who has never met her parents and lives, together with her guardians Jean Braidfute and Angus Macayre, in an austere castle in Scotland.
Since she was a child, she shows to be equipped with a special "gift" that makes her different from all other children; she has the power to get in touch with the souls of the dead and "see beyond the earthly things".
"Le anime bianche" ("The White People" in the original version) is a short novel where the famous English novelist, that is now best remembered for her children's books including "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (1886) and "The Secret Garden" (1911) shares, through the eyes of her protagonist, her own suggestions about death and refers to the personal relationship she had with his firstborn and with religion.
